Walrath has been acclaimed by All About Jazz for "his tremendous trumpet playing, a rich and varied approach to composition and his wonderful band" as well as "something that's missing from too much new jazz: a sense of fun and humour." Walrath is best-known for his work with Charles Mingus in the 1970s when he acted, effectively as MD on Mingus' final projects.
