Product Description Papercuts is Jason Quever's cathedral of sound, a place for the desperate worship of all things analog and devotion to the musicianship of the old world. His new album for Gnomonsong, Can't Go Back, is a marriage of timeless songs, richly textured studio sounds, classic rock/pop hookery, and focused narratives - all delivered with Quever's warm voice and wonderfully layered melodies. The seeds of Papercuts were sown in 2002 when he broke into a vacationing friend's apartment, eight-track in tow, to record piano tracks for Cass McCombs' 'Not the Way'. Ever since, Quever has kept busy, playing with and recording other friends' bands. He has collaborated with Casio tone for the Painfully Alone, the Sky green Leopards, as well as Vetiver, and considers working intimately with such contemporary songwriters to be a significant influence. 10 tracks. Gnomononsong. 2008. Amazon.com There's a persistent gauze throughout Can't Go Back, the second album from the Papercuts, and the light-diffusing effect is gently magical. Jason Quever's the brainchild, voice, and songwriter for the 10 tracks here, sporting a lo-fi yearn and a fascination for the pivot points where post-innocence folk mutates with indie rock. The audio mix is key: acoustic guitars, bass, organ, and drums become a hazy shimmer, so closely entwined that they almost become a single sound as Quever sings in a reverb-soaked, softly high pitch. Quever goes into an indecipherable warble at points on "Found Bird," amid whistles and martial snare-drum accompaniment, but for the most part he's poised frontally with a touch of confessionalism and more than a strong dash of simple, folkie naiveté, right where it crosses paths with lovelorn psychedelia. --Andrew Bartlett
Of all the three albums by Papercuts, "Can't Go Back" is without a doubt the best. From start to finish, the listener is hooked. The melodies are strong, the lyrics are confessional, the instruments do sound like one beautiful machine behind Jason's voice which like many great singers over the past decade, is drenched in spring or hall reverb giving it a triumphant quality as if he is singing like he is gonna die any day and must get these tunes in his head on wax before he meets his maker. I don't usually like to give an album 5 stars unless it really really deserves it. I'd give "Can't Go Back" if it were at all possible. Buy this album. Oh, and it sounds best cranked up really loud or through some decent ear cupped headphones.
