Back To Scratch
As an American fan of Charlotte Church's youthful work, I wondered what had become of her. In the US, she seemed to disappear after Prelude. I have recently learned that her life was quite prominent in the UK but we in the US completely missed it.Recently I received an email that contained the song from this CD, We Were Young, and I was again completely transfixed, this time not only by her lovely voice but the moving emotions in the lyric. I knew what she was singing about and it resonated in my own life. I ordered this record and was surprised to realize that it was shipped to me from Scotland. No US copies available.Anyone with foresight could see by the time she was 13, that classical music was not going to hold Charlotte Church's talent forever. I did not anticipate the depth and power her lyrics would contain however. She's a great songwriter. I suppose when you live a very unusual life, have a great talent at a very early age, a number of things happen to you mentally and emotionally that can either empower you or destroy you. Charlotte Church has passed through the crucible of the alchemist. She has been heated and cooled relentlessly. What was once high polished brass is emerging as refined gold of the highest quality. No longer content to sings songs hundreds of years old, she is singing her own songs harvested from her own life and they strike this listener and fan like a body blow by a champion, which, I admit, she is. Her final song on the CD, and only cover, is Joni Mitchell's River and it is the ideal period for the sentence that begins with Ms. Church's own song, Honestly.I haven't stopped listening to this record since I received it.
