In 1964 one of our two local radio stations, KCAP, in Helena, Montana, began playing a song which I immediately loved. The record did not catch on, and the station soon ceased playing it. I always wondered what its title was and what group had recorded it. Many decades later, I decided to see if I could identify the song and artist. I thought that the song might be called "The Boy From Crosstown" and, in the early 2010s I discovered that the Motown group the Marvelettes had recorded a song with that title in 1966. I knew that was too late a date for my 1964 song, but I searched for, found, and purchased a Marvelettes compilation album which contained the song, hoping that perhaps the Marvelettes version was a cover of the 1964 tune, and that I might discover, once I knew who wrote it, what group might have recorded it in 1964. Unfortunately, the Marvelettes' tune was not a version of the song I was looking for. A few years later, I learned that the Angels had recorded a song called "The Boy From Crosstown", and, having found a copy of the one Angels CD (of many available at that time), which included the song, I ordered it. Once I heard the first two measures of the Angels song, I knew that I had found what I had been looking for for years. That compilation is now out of print. Further, that version was recorded in monaural, not in stereo. Browsing on Amazon recently, I was pleased to find, released for the first time ever, the stereo version of the Angels' "The Boy From Crosstown." I ordered it at once. The song is wonderful in stereo. The beat is driving and infectious, and the Angels sound great.Once I obtained the monaural recording of the song some years ago, I tried to decipher the words the Angels sang. The words are not always clearly enunciated and it took me months to determine what the Angels were saying. The words are as follows:The boy from crosstown came into my neighborhoodHis reputation was bad--this boy sure looked goodHe didn't have too much to sayOne look and you knew right awayYou better not get in the way of the boy from crosstown. The boy from crosstown started lookin' at meAnd he was the guy who got what he wanted, you seeBut I was going with JoeAnd he wasn't letting me goSo it looks like trouble ahead for the boy from crosstown(INSTRUMENTAL AND VOCAL BREAK)The boy from crosstown looked them straight in the eyeThen everyone knew he would flatten 'em, and let him go byAnd when they let him come throughOne look at him and I knewThat I was gonna be true to the boy from crosstown(AD LIB LYRICS AND FADE OUT)In some ways, standing alone as above, the words may seem a bit lame, but they capture something of the feel of early 1960s high school life. The Angels' recordings are well done, and many of the songs on this 2-CD set are great and sound wonderful. I strongly recommend this 2-CD collection to you if you love the early 1960s girl groups sound!Bob Eldredge
