Not really a best-of despite what the title says, this release is basically a repackaging of Maxine’s first album from 1976 minus the song REASONS but with two cuts from her 1977 NIGHT LIFE aka LOVE HIT ME album.I THINK I WANNA POSSESS YOU – Fast-paced Jazzy Funk number opens the album strongBLESS YOU – Is a piece of ethereal musical enchantment…love itRIGHT BACK WHERE WE STARTED FROM – Feel-good Disco stomper with retro Supremes handclaps that seems to be more beloved now than it was back in the ‘70s as a Top Ten HitIN LOVE WE GROW – A more straightforward piano ballad that is probably Maxine’s best vocal performance on the albumGOTTA BE THE ONE – Pure ‘70s R&B and early Disco gem shades of Hues Corporation meets Gloria GaynorONE LAST RIDE – Another upbeat jazz-funk number, lyrics kind of simple and repetitiveYOU ARE EVERYTHING – By-the-numbers cover of the 1971 Stylistics hit but Maxine wrings every drop of emotion without going overboardLOVE HIT ME – Bouncy Motown throwback, not the best fast song here, but Maxine tears into it with great enthusiasmIF I EVER LOSE THIS HEAVEN – Covered by many, but IMO the definitive version is by the Philosopher KingsLOVE ENOUGH – Just an average AC track IMOYOU’VE GOT THE LOVE - The funkiest song on here, vocally its Maxine gettin’ her sexy on to a horn-heavy arrangementLIFE HAS JUST BEGUN – Relaxed and breezy vocals and arrangement on this unassuming little numberEVERY TIME I SEE A BUTTERFLY – Introspective but a little syrupyGOODBYE AGAIN – Maxine gets torchy to close off the albumIt’s absolutely criminal that only two of Maxine’s albums have ever been released on disc, and one of those (LEAD ME ON) was mastered so terribly by Razor & Tie Records you are better off getting it on vinyl. I emailed Big Break Records UK who do fantastic releases of vintage R&B and asked them to consider obtaining her entire catalog. An artist this good does not deserve to have the majority of her work relegated to decades-old used vinyl in flea markets and swap meets.
