"Slipping softly down beside me you whisper in my ear: 'is it dangerous to be a private eye?'"where Bob Neuwirth imitates the subdued voice of a female compagnon, is one of the many highly enjoyable moments of this record.Of course he isn't much of a singer. But hell this album starts with Eye On The Road: "Eastern brought a stranger - too low across the border, a harbinger of trouble yet to come." Followed with Annabelle Lee: "The sound of a Dixieland band reminds him of a garden, where the old ladies sit in the shade and flutter there fans."That's just for first lines, that build into well crafted stories written with a feel for the music of language that is truly poetic (and so few songs and poems really are). There are some downsides to this album. As many poets Neuwirth makes the mistake of filling some of the lesser songs up with metaphors. Writing loses it's neccisity when these are either too far fetched or clichéd.But the songs that are good, are just so damn good, they blow away all objections to some of the weaker songs here.Anyone who prefers good songWRITING (say Townes Van Zandt, Slobberbone, Warren Zevon, Freakwater) more than just plain good SONGwriting should get this album.
