Lift the stand to open the battery compartment. 0000 should appear in the display. If not please clear the timer by pushing the 2 left buttons at the same time. Once at 0000 if you press start you will begin counting up. If you enter a time from 0000 and press start you will begin counting down. If you press and hold the Min or Sec buttons you will fast forward. No need to continually press buttons for every number advance, just press and hold any button. Once you set a time and count down to 0000 the time initially set will stay in memory for use next time. This is great for repeated tasks. Just press "Start" once to turn the timer on and "Start" again to begin counting down from the time previously set that's still in memory. To clear memory and set a new time just press 2 left buttons to clear to 0000 and set a new time. You may pause and restart and never lose your accumulated time. If the timer is idle and not counting up or down it will turn itself off after 3 min. to save battery life. This isn't the cheapest option as far as simple timers go, however, it is an easy favorite among a sea of many not-quite-right options.I was looking to replace an egg timer I bought years ago, on a whim, from Radio Shack. That egg timer lasted longer - so much longer - than I ever thought ANY inexpensive timer would last, and I was set on finding a near exact replacement. Hours of searching and reading reviews later, I determined I simply could not find a twist timer that seemed to meet the reliability and simplicity that my beloved RS timer brought me (reliably since the 1990s!!!).I decided to settle on two timers - one to magnetically stick above my stove that would set quickly and be easy to read (this one), and another more complex Kitchenaid timer that I could theoretically use indoors and outdoors for my green egg and other hardy uses. Long story short, after using this gorgeous timer, I returned the other and haven't looked back.The design is simple, but the unique combination of its easy-to-read display, its ridiculously simple-to-set design and its durability and portability has given it (dare I say) a "je ne sais quoi" that has made me forget all about the ugly old egg timer.The magnet is excellent; it easily sticks to the stainless display above the stove, but it also easily slips into a pocket if wanted. The alarm is loud enough to hear from a distance without being annoying. Yes, it starts to count up again once the alarm goes off. Yes, the buttons have a satisfying click as you press them. Yes, you can hold down the buttons to make things go faster.Best timer to date. Definitely worth the extra couple bucks I paid over the other options. Really lovely. Can't believe I wrote such a long review about a timer.
