Robben Ford has become one of the world's most recognized blues musicians. His trademark, tasty guitar style, is reinforced with incredible depth in jazz and rhythm and blues. Back to the Blues is a special two-part series exploring the finer points of contemporary blues guitar playing and features exciting live performances by Robben's powerful trio, The Blue Line, with Roscoe Beck on bass and Tom Brechtlein on drums. Part 1: * Rhythmic playing * Improvisation ideas * In-depth look at the song "Livin' in a Fool's Paradise" * Robben talks about returning to playing the blues and his success in modern musicPart 2: * Triads, good phrasing, and simplicity * Comping and soloing * Special section devoted to right hand techniques * Robben's influence, guitars, stage set-up and how to get a good soundNOTE: Part1 and Part2 are available on a single disc.
I find this DVD very enjoyable, both from an entertainment perspective and from an instructional perspective. Robben Ford is a truly exceptional guitarist and it is just a great pleasure to watch him perform. His ability to really play the blues and also bring some jazz influences into the picture in a very tasteful way, make his style unique and very enjoyable. The DVD is 3 hours in length and was originally available as 2 VHS tapes; I believe mostly recorded in the first part of the nineties. Robben had 2 others before this, "Playing the Blues" and "The Blues and Beyond".This DVD is a quality production in sound and picture and comes with a music/tab booklet containing most of the examples. There are also 2 printable music/tab files from examples in the extras menue.Robben Ford and The Blue Line perform in studeo 5 great tunes: "I Don't Play", "Bad Luck Blues", "Start it Up", "Talk to Your Daughter", and "You Cut Me to the Bone". They are also performing "Born Under a Bad Sign" in the opening segment and "What'd I Say" in the closing segment. These seven performances alone are worth the price of the DVD.His demonstrations of rhythm playing and soloing and improvising ideas are very enjoyable to watch/listen to. While his instruction is for more advanced guitarists, it is inspiring and enlightening for guitarists of any level.I also highly recommend his 2 concert DVD's, The New Morning Paris Concert, and the Ohne Filter concert. First rate.
