Parenting during COVID-19 has been challenging. Parenting children and adolescents returning to school and life will clearly offer more challenges as the situation evolves (e.g new coronavirus variants). Managing child anxiety, as well as parent anxiety, will be demanding. School refusal may increase as some children have enjoyed fewer social or academic demands during quarantine . Other children may be stressed due to fears of not being socially or academically ready for the next year.In addition to school refusal, mental health considerations such as stress and anxiety, depression, obsessiveness, and oppositionality will pose problems for some as schools open for in-person classes across the country. For some students, social and academic problems have been caused or worsened by the revisions and adjustments made to education during 2020. Schools and parents alike will likely need help adjusting to the following school year.Clinical Psychologists, Beth Lusby and Sheryl Jackson, discuss a variety of concerns affecting children and adolescents as they emerge from the COVID -19 pandemic in Back to School, Back to Life. They review the importance of engaging in life and offer tips to help the adjustment of children throughout various developmental stages. They also discuss special populations that may have particular difficulties as the world returns to its previous experiences and expectations. Family situations (such as having generally anxious parents and or anxious children as well as oppositional children) are also reviewed. Throughout the text, the authors offer summaries and tips to help with each specific concern.
Picked this book up on a recommendation from a friend and it is excellent. Transitioning from remote and hybrid classes back into full in-person school is going to be a challenge for everyone and this book provides a ton of information and strategies for all ages and special needs. I really liked how each chapter started with an explanation of the challenges for that group and then a set of very specific ideas on how to help the transition. While you can read just the sections relating to your kids, I would suggest reading the entire book since every chapter has info that could be helpful. Good luck to us all in our recovery from COVID.
