I am amazed at how Brenda and The Tabulations were able to re-invent themselves over the years. This R&B group started out singing doo wop and ended their career singing disco with various hits in between. This 1977 album album opens with the dynamic disco infused "I'm A Superstar" which charted #31 U.S. R&B, which I remmeber was played in the disco clubs along with "Let's Go All The Way (Down)", which didn't chart but was many a DJ's favorite, such as Larry Levan from the Paradise Garage and Tee Scott from "Better Days" fame who used to mix and re-mix it making you jump up wanting more. "Take It Or Leave It" is a great slow jam which definitely captures the 70's "slow jam" sound. "Everybody's Fool" is another disco song that I remember hearing back in the day, it is one this track that Brenda's voice might remind you a bit of of the disco diva Carol Douglas."Home To Myself" written by Melissa Manchester and Carol Bayer Sager in 1973, is a Dusty Springfield cover, and despite the fact no one can deliver a song like Dusty, Brenda does a great job brining it home. "Leave Me Alone" is another great ballad a little bit more remeniscent of what made Brenda and The Tabulations such a great group; I love the talking she does during the tune. The album cd closes on the high energy "I Keep Coming Back For More."Technically there were no Tabulations during this Chocolate City sessions, it is more of a solo album using the "Tabulations" brand, however it is a great album and brilliant concept. Brenda Payton was a diva in the best sense of the word. She was talented, beautiful and one of the nicest people to work with. Sadly she passed away on June 14, 1992, but her legacy and body of work with be with us forever. I recommend this to all those fans of disco and music from the mid 70's.
