This movie gives a sense of Patrimoine, the French word that very roughly translates as patrimony. In French, there is the sense of a deeper attachment to the terrain, and the labors of the many generations that have preceded one. And in the case of this movie, those labors have provided a heritage of some of the very finest wine in the world. A heritage that must be tended to and renewed with every passing season, with one’s wits, labor, and attention to detail and a bit of luck with the weather is always most appreciated.Cedric Klapisch directed this movie, which was released in 2018. The parents of three adult children have died, bequeathing the vineyards and wine-making equipment. Pio Marmai plays Jean, a prodigal son of sorts, who left the family farm when he was young, to see the world. He is married, with a child, and manages vineyards in far-off Australia, yet is still within the force-field of the patrimony that tugs. He returns to a mixed reception. Ana Girardot plays Juliette, who is a youthful boss lady, managing the itinerant students et al. who come to pick the grapes. Francois Civil plays Jean’s brother, who demands to know why he did not come home for his mother’s funeral.Family dynamics, heritage and the often-esoteric knowledge of good wine making are all served up in a delightful mélange. Can reason prevail? The visuals are a delight, with the “golden reef” in the background, and in the far distance is the church steeple of one of my favorite villages, Meursault, a stop on the road south for a fill-up. So many of these small villages along the Cote d’Or are renowned throughout the world. An enjoyable 5-star look at the satisfaction that can be derived from meaningful work truffled with some joie de vivre.
