Ken White grew up listening to colorful stories in his father’s New York candy store. Restocking the store’s magazine racks with Architectural Digest, House Beautiful, and National Geographic gave him a glimpse into a world of possibilities beyond Brooklyn and awakened in him a passion for design, decorating, and travel.Following the sun—and his openly gay lifestyle—Ken moved to Los Angeles in 1964 and founded a flourishing interior design firm. After 25 successful years of work and international travel, he closed the business and moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico, to pursue a more spiritual and joyful life.Ken’s collection of true short stories will transport you from his dad’s candy store where it all began to the lurid bathhouses of Manhattan, the ancient cities of Morocco, and the gay life and discos of Amsterdam. Follow Ken on his spiritual journey from the ashrams in India to psychic development classes in Hollywood. Learn how his travels and Jewish upbringing in New York City influenced his adventures. The stories of Ken’s outrageous and spirited life in A View from the Back of the Candy Store are heartwarming, funny, and, at times, tear-provoking.Ken now lives in Palm Springs, California, where he is part of a thriving writing community.
This was thoroughly enjoyable book to read. The short vignettes each presented Ken and his world in a clear and engaging way. Some of the stories about his travels were so beautifully written that it was like looking at beautiful photographs, always with a smile on my face. As I went through the book, I would tell myself, "I'm only going to read one." I wanted to read a story and then savor it for a while., but I almost always kept reading one story after another, anxious to see what story, lesson, bit of wisdom or just simple humor was next. I ended up reading the book in just two days. I was sad when I came to the end. Ken has a wonderful way of painting pictures with words that made me laugh, smile, think and one story made me cry. My favorite story was "Your in the Army Now." Even though I was never in the army, I knew the feelings and struggles he described, albeit with a bit of humor. All the stories were told with a lifetime of wisdom and insight. Ken is living proof that gay men can have happy full lives in the midst of struggles, coming out and an epidemic. Three cheers and five stars for "A View from the Back of the Candy Store.!"
