I wanted to dye a bright red plaid vest as black as possible, and was surprised how well it worked. It took two dye sessions which means I used the whole kit and didn't have to worry about storing leftovers. The directions were very clear and easy to follow. My first dye session, I followed the directions exactly and dyed for an hour, then used fixative as directed. The second session, I followed all directions and left it in the dye for two days just to see how it would turn out, then used fixative as directed. Vest shows no damage and I'm happy with the level of black it reached in the end. You can just barely see the plaid pattern if you look closely, but I'm still satisfied. Last two photos are after I dyed, used the fixative, and machine washed them. I've only washed it once so far, not sure how well the dye will hold long-term.I had washed my work pants so much that they had became more gray than anything and this was a much cheaper fix then repurchasingI rarely write Amazon product reviews but this stuff is AMAZING. I dyed 5 pairs of very faded black jeans, a work shirt, leggings and a pair of denim shorts all with the one bottle and about 5 gallons of nearly boiling water and they came out looking brand new. All items were previously black but very very faded to the point of looking nearly acid wash/grey. The instructions were easy to follow and didn’t make a mess actually (did not stain my plastic outdoor sink) and color is vibrant and even. Would definitely recommendThanksThe first thing to note is that I used tangerine dye as an amendment to the Back to Black package. If you're confused as to why I'd add orange to a black dye kit, you can read the explanation on Rit's website which has detailed instructions for its products and various out of the box projects.Pros:-directions are very easy to follow-dye adhered to my fabric (Cordura/nylon) as expected and as advertised-the instructions (Rit website) for how to recolor an already colored fabric (why I used the tangerine dye) worked amazingly-I believe I achieved the best possible result, given other methods I'd researched for this project-I used less water than instructed and still achieved a great resultCons:-It was difficult to find a vessel large enough to fit my object (a ME problem)-requires LOTS of water per the instructions-after-dying rinse takes a long time and lots of waterTips:-Rit recommends the "stovetop" method and/or the hottest water possible (given your fabric's tolerance) for the best results: I had a large 12qt saucepot boiling water, while my electric tea kettle heated additional water. Once the pot was boiling, I transferred it to a large camping cooler and added more water to the pot and brought it to a boil to consistently have the hottest possible water. I closed the lid between adding water.-Once all the water was added, I mixed my dyes, ADDED VINEGAR, and put my object in the bath.-Nylon dyes fast, but I kept it in there for 20 min or so and stirred it constantly-Using a camping cooler really worked out well to hold the large object and keep the water as hot as possible during the dying process.-my object had multiple types of fabric on it- mostly Cordura/nylon. If you look real close at one of the all-black photos, you can see a slight hint of blue on the edge tape on this BASE jumping container. In real life, it looks really cool in bright Sun but is barely detectible otherwise.I will update this post for the "longevity" rating as I continue setting up and using my new BASE jumping container.Update 8 months later: Both the denim jacket and jeans washed out to a blotchy, uneven coverage after a couple months. They bled onto all other fabrics lightly that were washed with them too. The only way to reduce color loss is by using RETAYNE laundry additive, the generic of RIT dye fixative, everytime you wash your garment. Save yourself the trouble, buy some fiber-reactive dye from Dharma Trading or Jacquard. It's 10x cheaper, and never bleeds after the first wash.Rit dye is awesome. You should know the dye fixative works super well. I deducted 1 star because there's no recommendations from RIT regarding fabric quantity/kit. Thus, I tried dying a jean jacket and pants at once. While the dye fully penetrated in the dying stage, the pants had undyed splotches left after the first washing. I think this is because there wasn't enough dye fixative to fully cover both garments. To avoid splotches and having to buy a second kit to fix mistakes:- Use a big enough dye bath (5 gallon buckets with 3 gallons of water for 1 garment work perfectly. Top loading washers are also a good go to.)- There might be enough dye to do two medium sized garments at once (a couple pairs of pants). But there's only enough fixative for 1 garment to recieve full coverage.- Use as much heat as the fabric will tolerate (up to boiling if dying cotton/denim)! If you have a top loading washer, set it to hot and it works PERFECT. If not, use a large bucket with the hottest water available. I suggest using the hottest water from the kitchen sink, and mixing it with 2 kettles of boiling water. This did the the job! I was dying white fabric to match some black fabric that I have. I went through two normal bottles of the black Rit dye, but it was still off. The black wasn't as dark as the other fabric. This kit was perfect as it contained the jet black bottle. Now everything matches.Follow the instructions and everything will turn out great. I was able to dye 4 pairs of pants.Rubbish, don’t buy and when having issues with product, seller said our fault !Not recommendedFollowed the instructions to the letter and this dye only dyed the wooden spoon I used to stir my clothes. Wouldn’t recommend!Too complicated to use at homeQuise teñir de negro unos zapatos de tela sintética pero no sirvió de nada.Just follow the instructions and make sure you set aside the required time.
