Cathal and the Mansions sort of had a messy discography, as messy as their relationship with the music industry. There are several EPs, songs that appear on more than one album and different iterations of an album between the UK and the US. This collection features music from the Against Nature album, songs recorded at the time of Against Nature, selections from the Hive EP and a couple of covers, of Ministry's song Stigmata and the Velvet Underground's Lady Godiva's Operation. That said, any collection of Cathal Coughlan music is pure magic. His brilliant insights, dark and cutting humor and ear for musical stylings is evident here and there's happy variety in the tracks. He's seldom better than when taking on religious imagery and hypocrisy and Bishop of Babel and Holy Mugger are two fine examples. There's the wonderful 13th Century Boy and the two great hits, Only Losers Take the Bus and Blues for Ceaucescu, and the hilarious bookends The Day I Lost Everything and On Suicide Bridge. Come Back My Children is vintage Fatima Mansions and you should find anything you can from them, as well as Cathal in the band Microdisney and his glorious solo work, The Sky's Awful Blue being essential in appreciating the man and his unique take on culture.
