If you enjoy classic, suspenseful films and one that has a witchcraft theme to it, then this 1945 Walter Colmes' film, THE WOMAN WHO CAME BACK, is highly recommended. I love everything about it - the opening sequence has a voice-over narration that clues viewers in as to what the film will be about. Then an old woman with a dog boards a bus, giving the driver some currency that is outdated, before she picks a seat next to Lorna Webster (Nancy Kelly), who is returning to her old New England hometown of Eben Rock. The bus Lorna is on plunges into the icy river not long after. Events that transpire soon convince Lorna that she is under a spell cast by the witch Jezebel who was burned at the stake 300 years ago after being found guilty of witchcraft. The sentence was passed by Lorna's great-great grandfather and Lorna suspects she is cursed because of what her ancestor did.I am a lush for witchcraft-themed films (I consider BURN, WITCH, BURN one of the best of the genre), and I love classic, period films, so this was a straight winner for me. The B&W film actually enhances the creepiness of the small, New England village that is the setting for this film, and the music is aptly suspenseful. Nancy Kelly is credible as the accursed woman and the rest of the cast do a decent job in their respective roles. There's a nice twist here that added to my enjoyment of the plot. It is not a long movie, more's the pity, but effective nonetheless. This was the perfect watch for a lazy Sunday afternoon and I truly enjoyed it.
