Let me start by saying: if you have any interest in dogs, mysteries, good writing or humor, I can guarantee you will like this book. I seldom pay more than a few dollars for books and have discovered many new, interesting authors without emptying my wallet. I bought this book for the regular Amazon price and was not disappointed. That's how much I enjoyed this book. When I got to the review page, I realized this is not my first Nick Trout book. Six years ago I read his book "Tell Me Where It Hurts" and it's still in my favorites bookcase.Dr. Trout writes about what he knows and his stories reflect that knowledge. He makes me care about a socially awkward pathologist who comes home to take over the veterinary practice his father started and that has struggled to survive since his father's death. It turns out Cyrus has the makings of an excellent vet because he is very good at seeing the symptoms of his patients and together with his clinical knowledge of disease he is able to treat even the most difficult cases.Of course there is much more to the book that kept me reading into the wee hours: the big chain veterinary clinic that has computerized treatment and is gobbling up the smaller independent vets, confusing signals from the attractive waitress, the sickly stranger who asks Cyrus to give him drugs for euthanasia, the teenage hacker who signs up Cyrus for a date with his girlfriend's mother and the list goes on.If you're looking for a good book, look no further. This one is sure to satisfy.
