Using the same effects units and equipment as those used at his famed Black Ark studio in Jamaica, Lee ''Scratch'' Perry has produced a selection of raw, deep, roots rhythms and dubs. Following the contentious closing of his Black Ark studio in 1979, and its eventual burning in 1983, we fast-forward to the present day where Lee worked in London's ''Rolling Lion Studio'' with UK producer Daniel Boyle. For the project, Daniel and Lee amassed original vintage pieces of equipment from Lee's production heyday filling the studio with Grampian and Fisher reverbs, a multitude of tape delays, the Mu-Tron Bi-Phase, reel-to-reel tape machines, old compressors, valve amplifiers, vintage filters, and a large analogue mixing desk. The album is being released on Lee Perry's own Upsetter record label, and is the first Lee Perry Production featuring him back on the controls, to reach the world in many years.
I've been listening to this double CD since I bought it here on Amazon in January 2015.I have listened many times and it has brought me a lot of enjoyment, so here I will share my thoughts. The songs are wonderful, I enjoy listening to both CD's one after another, it's a plentiful and satisfying experience.I'm pleased that the sound quality is very good, the liner notes refer to the efforts made to assemble an assortment of old and historically suitable gear for the making of this recording. To my ear a very good result is obtained, modern sound quality is achieved that compliments and enhances the substantial musical artistic achievement that I am able to witness and participate in as a listener. So, my thanks to you, Mr. Lee Scratch Perry, for offering this recording to the public. If you are not familiar with the musical style of Mr. Perry, I would suggest you not be deterred by that condition from purchasing Back At The Controls as the talent of this unique artist reaches across boundaries of style to connect with a music listener in pursuit of the real, and with music of substance. My recommendation: buy it and enjoy it!
